Girl killed after debris from bridge crushes car

SEALY, Texas — A bridge that collapsed Thursday after a large truck hit it crushed a 12-year-old girl and also injured her mom and another child in the same car, authorities said.

The bridge, just north of Interstate 10 where U.S. 90 crosses over Texas 36, had been closed for two weeks in December 2014 because of damage from an oversized truck passing underneath, The Sealy News reported. At the time, Texas Department of Transportation officials were exploring options to fix the aging bridge, including replacing it in 2017.

At about 9:45 a.m. CT Thursday, another truck hit the bridge about 40 miles west of Houston, causing the collapse. Debris crushed the front of a Chevrolet Camaro with three people inside.

Brien Bullock, 12, was in the front seat, according to the Texas Department of Safety. Her mom, Leah Bullock, 35, of El Campo, Texas, was driving the vehicle, was taken to a Houston hospital by helicopter, and was listed Thursday afternoon in good condition.

A second child, Breanbon Gardner, 9, was in the backseat and was not injured, troopers said.

The truck's driver, Carl Weige, 72, of Bellville, Texas, was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and released, said Sealy's assistant police chief, Jay Reeves.
