Elderly Houston couple gifted with free lawn care for a year

The Williamses, now in their 80s, were granted a gift through a church partnership.

HOUSTON — Lawn care for the next year will be covered for one elderly northeast Houston couple.

The Williamses, now in their 80s, can't get around like they used to. However, Zelma Williams said one big burden has now been lifted through a partnership between the Lighthouse Church and Axe Lawn Services.

Mrs. Zelma Williams and her daughter are looking at a transformation in progress.

"I’ve just been on cloud nine," Williams said.

Williams and her husband Roosevelt have lived in their northeast Houston home since 1982. For a while, they were able to handle all of this on their own. Now, that has changed.

"I like to watch things grow. I love to see things grow," Williams said.

Around Mother's Day, the Williams' found out they would receive this blessing.

Lighthouse Church partnered with Axe Lawn Services to donate yard renovations, which include reshaping the lawn, and developing new landscaping. This is all while adding a little color on top of a lawn care service for one year.

"We are all family. We are a community and we just want to help one another," said Axe Lawn Services owner, Andres Cabrera.

Williams' daughter Denitra Vidrine put in a prayer request. She realized at 80 years old, her parents' bodies can't quite handle this job.

"Give back to our community and make a real tangible impact, not just spiritually in the sanctuary on Sundays, but in people's homes and people's daily lives," said Lighthouse Church communication officer, Brian Smith.

The Williamses are grateful they'll be able to watch the flowers bloom.

"It's going to take a whole lotta burden off of me. Not a little bit. A mega burden, and I can sit back and watch things grow," Williams said.
