Texas native, who decommitted from SEC school for HBCU, makes history as 1st HBCU gymnast to win national title

Fisk University’s Morgan Price, part of the first HBCU gymnastics team, made history by winning the United States Gymnastics Collegiate National title.

WEST CHESTER, Pa. — Editor's note: The video above is a WFAA report about Price in January 2023.

First, she etched her own path in 2022 by de-committing from the University of Arkansas to be part of the first-ever HBCU collegiate gymnastics team at Fisk University.

Now, she etched her name in the history books as the first HBCU gymnast to ever win a national title. Her name is Morgan Price, an alumna from Coppell High School in North Texas.

WFAA's Morgan Young profiled Price in 2022 after she made the historic decision to reject the SEC offer to attend Fisk.

"I had to call my coach at Arkansas and de-commit," Price told WFAA at the time. "It was a hard conversation for me because I know I had worked hard for that, and she had given me so many opportunities ... Most gymnasts don't even get an offer to an SEC school. I was super grateful."

Corrinne Tarver, Fisk's head gymnastics coach, told WFAA in 2022 she was surprised when she got an email from Morgan Price asking about joining the team.

"That was a huge leap of faith," Tarver said. "It really was. I’m so blessed that Morgan took that leap of faith with me. This was building a program out of nothing. She took that leap, even though I didn’t have all the answers at the time."

Now, two years removed from that leap of faith, Price has re-written the record books. She scored a 39.225 in the all-around to win the United States Gymnastics Collegiate National Title at Hollinger Fieldhouse in West Chester, Pa. on Friday night.

With a national championship already in her resume, Price still has the opportunity to snag more hardware. She'll compete on Vault, Bars and Floor on Sunday, April 14 in the Individual Event Finals.
