Police: Bullet lodged in Colorado shooting victim's necklace

Police say the .22 caliber bullet was fired during an argument and was stopped by a silver necklace.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — The Commerce City Police Department credits 10 millimeters of metal for saving the life of a shooting victim.

Police said on Tuesday, two people got into an argument when a shot was fired, hitting the victim's necklace, according to police.

The .22 caliber bullet became lodged in the necklace and prevented it from entering the victim's neck, police said.

The victim suffered a puncture wound on his neck from the shot, according to police.

The shooting suspect, later identified as Richard Hillman Sr., was arrested by police and is facing attempted homicide charges, police said on social media.

Police are not sure what kind of metal the necklace was made out of, but because the necklace stopped the bullet and given silver's soft characteristics, police believe the necklace was not pure silver.

"Necklaces save lives," the police department posted. "The jewelry industry has a new slogan after the victim of a shooting yesterday was likely saved by his silver chain, which stopped a .22 caliber bullet from entering his neck."

"We'd say he really dodged a bullet, but in reality, he LODGED a bullet."
