LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Why are you seeing flags around Kentucky at half-staff?
Governor Andy Beshear ordered flags around Kentucky to be lowered to half-staff today in observance of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
"Today, we remember those lost at Pearl Harbor 83 years ago," Beshear said on X. "We owe a debt to all those who bravely answered the call to defend freedom. It's our duty to support our military members and their families."
President Joe Biden released a proclamation yesterday announcing Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024, will honor the 2,403 service members and civilians who were killed at the U.S. Naval Station Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941.
"Let us carry forward their mission of forging a better future for humankind -- one of greater dignity, opportunity, and security for all," he said.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was the president of the United States during the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
President Roosevelt declared Dec. 7, 1941, as, "a day which will live in infamy" and signed the Declaration of War against Japan the following day, Dec. 8.
