FRANKFORT, Ky. — In a matter of hours, Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to announce her selection for running mate, in what multiple outlets are now reporting is a two-man race between Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota and Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has remained on the shortlist for weeks, confirmed to have been vetted by Harris’ team. But reports that Beshear was not one of three candidates who met with the VP for formal interviews in Washington D.C. on Sunday cast doubt over his chances of being the No. 2 on the Democratic ticket.
But in a phone interview Monday morning, former Louisville Congressman John Yarmuth told WHAS11 this is all still speculation until Harris makes her final choice.
“Andy certainly has the vitality that I think would appeal to a younger voter in the country,” Yarmuth said of Beshear. “Also, I understand there were some interviews conducted by Zoom. He could have done that easily, of course.”
Despite not speaking publicly since last Thursday, Beshear has left a paper trail of social media posts over the weekend leaving Kentuckians wondering if he’d had an opportunity to speak with Harris. That includes a post from a baseball game in Louisville with his son and a photo from a Sunday morning service at First Christian Church in Frankfort.
On Monday morning, Beshear was in Louisville for a brief period to speak at a summit for the National Conference of State Legislatures.
Late Monday afternoon, Beshear headlined a private fundraising event for Harris in Chicago.
On X, Beshear also posted a video with the caption reading, “I’m a pro-union governor,” just a day after UAW President Shawn Fain told CBS’ Face the Nation that Beshear is his “favorite” of the contenders to be the Democratic vice presidential nominee.
According to Politico, Harris is expected to announce her choice for running mate on Tuesday morning.
