Attica Scott files for Kentucky Senate seat; Governor supports JCPS bus union head for House seat

The deadline to register to vote in the May Primary is April 22, and Primary Election Day is May 21.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — This year's primary races in Kentucky are shaping up to be some interesting battles.

Former Louisville state Rep. Attica Scott, a Democrat, has filed to run in the 33rd District, against Democrat Minority Leader Senator Gerald Neal.

He's been in the Senate since 1989.

District 33 covers part of Jefferson County, including a majority of west Louisville into south Louisville.

Scott ran against Democrat Morgan McGarvey for Congress but lost in the primary.

Former Metro Council President David Tandy said this is nothing new.

"He's had other people tried to file and run against him in the past, and he's been successful there," he said. "So we'll just have to wait, sit back and see how it unfolds."

In a statement to WHAS11 News, Neal said "anyone is free to file."

"I am proud of my record and my achievements," he said.

Meanwhile, Gov. Andy Beshear recruited Jefferson County Public Schools bus union head John Stovall for a seat in the Kentucky legislature.

Iris Wilbur with McCarthy Strategic Solutions said she commends the governor for stepping up this election cycle.

"Two years ago, there was a record number of seats just uncontested that Republicans pretty much either had a primary or they, they had no contest in the November election," she said. "But I'm telling you, an even year election where we have a presidential race at the top of the ticket, I feel confident that Republicans up and down the ticket will be successful."

The deadline to register to vote in the May primary is April 22, and Primary Election Day is May 21.
