LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Tuesday morning, Kentucky lawmakers struck down a last-minute change made to an education bill.
The late addition would have required an audit of Jefferson County Public School and possibly called for the district to be divided.
Senate Bill 156 passed out of a House committee Monday but was sent back to the same committee Tuesday morning.
A proposed substitution called for an audit of JCPS, and it would be paid for by the district.
Auditors would have been asked to report recommendations for improvement and how JCPS could potentially be divided into multiple districts.
Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio called the move a punch in the gut.
“If you divide our district in any way because of the housing in Jefferson County, the racial and societal economic divide, will be extreme poverty district, any way you slice Jefferson County. And that is a major problem,” he said.
Lawmakers ultimately heard the warning and decided to not adopt the changes.
The original bill to create a statewide reading research center still passed.
