Democrats line up to run in two Louisville, Ky. House races

Two districts where Democrat voters outnumber Republicans will see new State Representatives.

LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) -- Kentucky voters head to the polls Tuesday to vote in the Kentucky Primary Election.

Two State House Districts that include Louisville are being seen as “in play” for the first time in more than a decade. But if trends continue, that “in play” means whoever wins the Democratic primary on Tuesday will likely represent the district after November’s General Election.

After more than 15 years in office, 43rd District State Representative, Democrat Darryl Owens, is retiring due to health reason.

Democrat Jim Wayne has represented the 35th District since 1991. He too is retiring.

With those two well-established candidates stepping aside, Democrats have lined up to vie for those seats.

"I don't see much of a chance of a Republican winning either of these districts," Democratic strategist Matt Erwin said. “So your primary is basically going to determine who goes to Frankfort and the way that that district has been, whoever wins could be a presence in Frankfort for a very long time.”

The Democratic primary winners will face Republican opponents in the General Election. They may also see an Independent challenger in the fall but Independents have until later this summer to declare their intention to run.
