LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky State Senator Gerald Neal has won the Democratic primary for Kentucky’s 33rd District in the General Assembly.
The longtime state senator and Democratic leader was challenged by former state Rep. Attica Scott and Michael Churchill.
"It has been an honor to serve this district, and it will be an honor to continue to serve. I have spent my career in office working to be an effective legislator who improves the lives of the people in my district and across Kentucky. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to do so, and to keep standing up for our shared values in Frankfort. I want to recognize my opponent for her commitment to justice and service to our community," he said in a statement Tuesday night.
Neal was the first African American elected to the Senate in 1989 and help sponsor a variety of bills including KCHIP that expanded Medicaid to Kentucky’s families and healthcare coverage to children across the commonwealth.
There were no Republican challengers in this district.
District 33 covers part of Jefferson County, including a majority of west Louisville into south Louisville.
