Andy Beshear says Trump's policies 'give rapists more rights than their victims' during DNC speech

The governor gave a passionate speech about abortion rights and unity within America at the Democratic National Convention.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky's governor stepped onto the Democratic National Convention stage Monday night to applause and chants of "Andy" from the United Center crowd.

When Gov. Andy Beshear stepped to the podium after Hadley Duvall's introduction, he didn't waste any time and started talking about abortion and how former President Donald Trump's actions "have resulted in extreme bans on abortion in my state."

"Folks, Donald Trump appointed the Supreme Court justices who got us into this mess," Beshear said. "Here's the thing: Trump and [JD] Vance simply don't believe in your freedom."

Duvall, a fellow Kentuckian, shared her own story with abortion.

She was raped by her stepfather when she was just 12 years old. She became pregnant and miscarried. Her stepfather was convicted of rape and is in prison.

"[Trump] calls [abortion bans] a beautiful thing; what is so beautiful about a child having to carry her parent's child," she said during the introduction.

Beshear called her "one of the bravest people I have ever met."

Kentucky's governor said women shouldn't have to carry nonviable pregnancies to term "just to listen to her child die, or to hear no sound at all," and that women should be able to make their own decisions about their pregnancies and family planning.

Beshear talked about how people treating others right transcends party lines.

When Kentucky was hit by natural disasters in recent years, he said both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris called to ask how they could help the commonwealth.

"They didn't ask me who Kentuckians voted for, they asked me what Kentuckians needed, and folks, they delivered," he said.

Beshear also mentioned how he got reelected by beating Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's and Trump's hand-picked candidate Daniel Cameron.

"This November, we're going to beat them again," he said.
