DES MOINES, Iowa — Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is speaking in Iowa Saturday night as he continues to be among the popular choices to be Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate in the presidential election.
Beshear is the keynote speaker at a fundraising event Saturday night hosted by the state's Democratic party. Earlier this week, ABC News and the Associated Press reported Beshear is one of at least four people being vetted for the Harris ticket.
Iowa Democrats released a hype video Thursday ahead of Beshear's arrival. The 1 minute, 38-second video highlights Beshear's gubernatorial victories with an emphasis on his abilities to win in a deep red state.
It also notes statistics on job creation, and his efforts to preserve rights for transgender individuals.
Beshear spoke to WHAS11 earlier this month about his trip.
"Well, I want to help. I want to help make sure we elect good people, and that we are competitive even in tough states," he said. "States like Kentucky are far too often overlooked in national politics. We can't go on having presidential elections decided by just eight states. And so, I want to go to be able to talk to folks in other states about how we win in tough states like Kentucky."
WHAS11 senior reporter Isaiah Kim-Martinez will be in Des Moines Saturday and will bring you coverage of the event on-air and online. Beshear's speech, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST, will be live streamed on WHAS11.com, WHAS11+ and the WHAS11 YouTube channel.
Beshear could bring up abortion in his address. A law banning most abortions in Iowa after six weeks of pregnancy is set to take effect Monday.
Beshear has been outspoken about abortion and campaigned against Kentucky's near-total abortion ban in 2023.
