Kamala Harris campaigns in Indiana, offering visions of America’s future; ‘We are not going back’

It was her second public appearance outside of the nation's capitol since taking up the mantle as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

INDIANAPOLIS — Vice President Kamala Harris offered competing visions of America’s future on Wednesday while speaking to hundreds of Zeta Phi Beta sorority members in Indianapolis.

It was Harris' second public appearance outside the nation's capitol since taking up the mantle as the presumptive Democratic nominee for president.

Her appearance in Indiana, however, was scheduled prior to President Joe Biden ending his reelection bid last weekend.

"I deeply believe in the promise of America: a promise of freedom, opportunity and justice -- not for some, but for all," Harris said. "And for generations the finer women of Zeta Phi Beta Inc., have fought to build that brighter future. When I was a United States senator, I would see this group of powerful leaders walking through the halls of Congress in white and blue, and I always knew I was looking at some of the most powerful advocates for justice in America."

She said her vision of America’s future is a stark contrast to former President Donald Trump’s and criticized the Republican party’s “Project 2025” agenda, which Harris called a plan to “return America to a dark past.”

“Can you believe they put that in writing” Harris asked. “These extremists want to take us back, but we are not going back. We are not going back.”

Harris said her fight is for the nation’s freedoms.

“Across our nation, we are witnessing a full-on assault on hard-fought, hard-won freedoms and rights,” she said, citing the repeal of Roe vs. Wade. “Let me tell you something, when I am President of the United States, and when Congress passes a law to restore those freedoms, I will sign it into law. We are not playing around.”

Despite days of speculation, Harris didn’t give any clues about her running mate. The list includes four elected Democrats, including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, according to ABC News and the Associated Press.

Biden is expected to address the nation from the Oval Office on Wednesday night, which Harris addressed. She said Biden is “a leader with a bold vision.”
