LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to announce her running mate within the next few days as the two embark on a campaign blitz across several swing states set to begin next week.
Wednesday night, UAW President Shawn Fain joined CNN’s Abby Phillip on NewsNight and spoke about who union workers want to see join Harris on the Democratic ticket.
“The top name was Andy Beshear,” Fain said.
The two-term governor of Kentucky has been among the top contenders to be Harris’ running mate since President Joe Biden announced he would be exiting the race.
Recent polling from ABC has found many Americans don't recognize Beshear, or any of the other potential VP contenders. However he is tied for second place in terms of overall favorability.
“I’m a huge Andy Beshear fan,” Fain added. “He’s been there with us every step of the way.”
Last October, Beshear joined nearly 9,000 workers at Ford’s Kentucky Truck Plant who were picketing as part of a national autoworkers strike.
"I wanted to be here today, not as a governor, but as a dad, as somebody with a family knowing that you are sacrificing right now for so many Kentucky families," Beshear said in a video shared by the UAW International Union. "I want you to know, that I'm here for you and your families. We care about you and what you are doing is trying to help thousands upon thousands of Kentucky families have that better life, be able to raise their family working just one good job, and to give your kids or grandkids more opportunity than many of us every dreamed of.
Fain said the other name on the list of potential VP contenders the union would want is Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
“Those are really our top two people,” he said. “Both of those men walked the picket line with our workers this past fall and they’ve always been there for working class people.”
