State's first Latino senator charms RNC crowd with passionate speech

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The first Latino elected to the Kentucky State Senate is drawing a lot of attention for his comments at the Republican National Convention Wednesday night.

Senator Ralph Alvarado told the story of his family and how he was raised by “proud legal immigrants” from Costa Rica and Argentina.

He told of the struggles his parents face learning a second language and instilling the importance of keeping their culture and having pride in America.

Republican leaders immediately took to social media after Alvarado’s speech praising the passionate speech that included accusing Hillary Clinton of failing the Latino community.

“At their core – and this is important for us to understand – Hispanics believe what Republicans believe. Traditional family values, church, faith in God, the dignity of work and the opportunity for self-sufficiency that comes from a free society and a limited government,” he said.

Senator Alvarado also spoke in Spanish reminding Latino voters to think of the misery and oppression many fled in other countries and insisted they prevent that misery from happening in America by voting for Donald Trump.
