FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A Republican state senator in Kentucky has withdrawn from the race for attorney general.
Republican Whitney Westerfield withdrew from the race on Friday. The decision seems to give a clear path to the GOP nomination for Daniel Cameron, U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell's former lawyer.
Westerfield was the Republican nominee for attorney general in 2015 but lost a close race to Democrat Andy Beshear. In an interview, Westerfield said he withdrew because he was facing a tough primary election and he wanted to spend more time with his growing family.
Westerfield did not say he would endorse Cameron, saying he would wait until Tuesday's filing deadline to make a decision.
Beshear is running for governor instead of seeking re-election. Former Democratic state House Speaker Greg Stumbo is planning to run.
