LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A St. Matthews woman is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Shelby County.
Ashleigh Bertucci, 30, was shot and Monday night on Mary Crest Drive in Shelbyville as officers responded to a welfare check.
We've learned from St. Matthews Police, which is where Bertucci lived, that two separate calls were made to them to check on Bertucci's well-being, this was hours before she was shot and killed by a Shelbyville Police Officer Monday night.
"Oh my god, I just couldn't believe it," Ellen Dries said. She lives in Saint Matthews across the street from Bertucci. Dries says Bertucci was a mother of two boys adding, "He's a good little boy and so is he, he's a good little boy too."
St. Matthews Police say officers received a call from someone Monday afternoon saying they were worried Ashleigh Bertucci was going to harm herself.
Officers say they met with Bertucci who told them she was fine.
"In the last week, there's been a lot of activity over there,” Dries said.
St. Matthews police say they received a second call around 8 p.m. from a different caller saying they feared Bertucci was going to harm her boyfriend.
St. Matthews police were able to determine Bertucci's boyfriend lived on Mary Crest Drive in Shelbyville, they handed over their information to Shelbyville police who then attempted to locate Bertucci and her boyfriend.
Around 10 p.m., the boyfriend was located and officers found Bertucci in a car, that's where a Shelbyville officer shot and killed her.
Kentucky State Police has yet to release the circumstances surrounding the investigation, the name of the officer has also not been released, but we do know he is now on administrative leave.
Bertucci's employer, Recovery Care of Kentucky on Breckenridge Lane released a statement:
Ashleigh Bertucci was a caregiver with Recovery Care and started with the company in September 2014. We’re not at liberty to comment on any pending investigation, but we offer sympathy to Ms. Bertucci’s family at this time.
