LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It’s never too early to start planning for the 2024 total solar eclipse. In fact, now’s the time to do it before hotels and Airbnb’s get fully booked.
The day of the solar eclipse is April 8. A large swath of the United States is in the path of totality, but the duration of darkness depends on where you’re watching from.
Louisville is not in the path of totality, however you won’t have to travel far to get the full experience.
If you’re wanting to stay in Kentucky, Paducah is an option, but the short one minute 31 second duration of totality may not be worth the drive.
For longer durations, Indiana is the place to be. Bloomington will experience the longest period of darkness in the area at four minutes and two seconds.
Aside from a few cities in Texas, Indianapolis is the next largest city in the path of totality and you can expect just about four minutes of the moon blocking the face of the sun. If you want the celebration to go on longer, "Visit Indy" is making a whole weekend out of it!
Terre Haute and Evansville will get just over three minutes of seeing the day turn to night.
Closer to home, French Lick Resort and the University of Southern Indiana are taking advantage of the three minutes of totality by hosting their own viewing parties.
