Reports: Pat Kelsey poised to become new Louisville head basketball coach

Kelsey has made the NCAA Tournament four of the last five years with Winthrop and College of Charleston.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville is reportedly closing in on its next men's basketball coach.

According to multiple reports published Wednesday, Pat Kelsey will soon leave the College of Charleston for the Louisville job. Field of 68's Jeff Goodman first reported the news.

According to Goodman, a deal is expected between the two sides "barring a last-minute breakdown in negotiations."

Kelsey led Charleston to a 27-8 record this year and won the Coastal Athletic Association tournament. The Cougars earned a 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament and lost to 4 seed Alabama last week in the first round.

Kelsey, a Cincinnati native, took Winthrop to the NCAA Tournament in 2020 and 2021. He then took the Charleston job and guided them to the tournament in each of the last two seasons.

He compiled a 186-95 record at Winthrop from 2012-2021, and a 75-27 record at Charleston from 2021-2024.

Kelsey would replace Kenny Payne, who was fired earlier this month after winning just 12 games in two seasons at the helm.

On Tuesday, multiple reports indicated New Mexico's Richard Pitino was a serious candidate for the job. He is the son of Rick Pitino, who led the Cardinals from 2001-2017 and was fired after multiple scandals.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
