Louisville moves up in College Football Playoff rankings

Louisville's next game is Thursday night against Virginia.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville football team continues to be well-positioned for a postseason run.

The Cardinals (8-1, 5-1 ACC) moved up two spots to No. 11 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday night. UL is coming off a convincing 34-3 victory over Virginia Tech last Saturday.

Louisville is in the driver's seat for a spot in the ACC championship game with two conference games remaining. The Cards can punch their ticket with wins over Virginia (2-7, 1-4) Thursday night and Miami (6-2, 2-3) Nov. 18.

UofL would likely meet Florida State (9-0, 7-0) in the conference title game. The Seminoles are No. 4 in the CFP rankings.

A win over an unbeaten FSU team could be enough to propel Louisville to the playoff. The top four teams will qualify and compete for the national championship.

While special things are possible down the road, head coach Jeff Brohm is known for his week-to-week approach.

"I think everyone reads and sees what's out there on Twitter and all those things, and there's nothing wrong with that," Brohm said during his Monday news conference. "For us it's simple: if you win and take care of business, then good things can happen. We've got come back on a short week and win this football game. If we do that, then good things are still possible."

UL's final game of the season is against Kentucky on Nov. 25.

The top four this week remained unchanged with Ohio State No. 1, Georgia No. 3 and Michigan No. 3 ahead of Florida State. The full CFP rankings can be found here.

On Saturday, Isaac Guerendo rushed for career highs of 146 yards and three touchdowns, and Jawhar Jordan and Jadon Thompson also scored as Louisville shut down Virginia Tech in a 34-3 rout.

The showdown for second place steadily became one-sided as the Cardinals moved closer toward a berth in the conference championship in their first season under Jeff Brohm. Their relentless defense didn't allow a touchdown for the second consecutive week and held the Hokies to just 140 yards overall, creating chances that Guerendo quickly turned into scores.
