LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Metro Police Department chief broke her silence on Scottie Scheffler's recent arrest Tuesday, saying an update will be coming later this week.
Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel issued a statement Tueday saying the internal investigation is still progressing. Mayor Craig Greenberg said Monday the department was reviewing whether or not the arresting officer failing to activate his body camera was a policy violation.
“The internal investigation is still ongoing," Gwinn-Villaroel said. "Any policy violations that are revealed through the course of the investigation will be appropriately addressed according to LMPD’s disciplinary protocol. The department intends to provide an additional update on the investigation on Thursday, May 23, 2024.”
Scheffler was originally scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, but that hearing was pushed back to June 3. He is charged with felony 2nd degree assault of a police officer; 3rd degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from officers directing traffic.
Greenberg has stated video from a stationary camera across the street from where the incident occurred would be released this week.
LMPD Det. Bryan Gillis arrested Scheffler, and an arrest citation claimed the two-time Masters champion disobeyed orders to stop his vehicle, resulting in Gillis being dragged to the ground. Scheffler was attempting to enter Valhalla following an unrelated fatal crash, which led to dozens of officers arriving on the scene to direct traffic.
Scheffler and his attorney called the incident a "misunderstanding."
LMPD's body camera policy states: "Members will immediately activate their BWC in recording mode prior to engaging in all law enforcement activities or encounters." There are few exceptions, including if the safety of an officer is jeopardized.
