LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It was a daylong celebration over at Churchill Downs Wednesday to mark 150 days until the 150th Kentucky Derby -- and a time capsule to commemorate the milestone won't be sealed until you help fill it.
It was one of the many events that took place at the Kentucky Derby Museum.
“Kentucky Derby 150 is going to be one of the biggest wins for this Commonwealth, with not only the most people here but the most viewers and it’s an exciting time to show what Kentucky is,” Gov. Andy Beshear said.
“It is the best reflection of our city and our state," Mayor Craig Greenberg said.
And the best reflection of community members throughout, including those joining the fun at the Derby Museum.
“As our way of saying thank you to the community we wanted to open our doors for an all day party. So it’s free admission all day," Patrick Armstrong, president and CEO of the Kentucky Derby, said.
While inside, guests got to snag gifts and leave their mark. Everyone even got a chance to take a picture and place it inside of the Kentucky Derby 150 time capsule, which will be stored in the museum’s vault for the next 50 years.
Greenberg and Beshear were some of first to share their memories.
Guests also enjoyed a long list of activities, like strutting in a runway contest and shopping for hats along with a proud display of Derby history which - thanks to the community - will live on for the next 150 years.
“They are the back bone of everything we’re celebrating today," Jennifer Chappell, District 15 Councilwoman, said.
