KHRC stewards order Sierra Leone jockey Tyler Gaffalione to film review of Kentucky Derby 150

KHRC stewards review every race in Kentucky live and by video replay before posting the official results.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Editor's note: The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has fined Tyler Gaffalione for touching Forever Young.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) is ordering one of the jockeys from Kentucky Derby 150 to a film review on May 9.

KHRC spokesperson Ricki Gardenhire said Monday stewards with the commission review every race in Kentucky live and by video replay before posting the official results. However, following the 150th Run for the Roses, the stewards ordered Sierra Leone's jockey, Tyler Gaffalione, to a film review later this week due to what transpired in the final moments of Saturday's close race.

"The Stewards conduct film reviews routinely to review the conduct of jockeys during a race," Gardenhire said.

Stewards can take disciplinary action against jockeys, and any issued penalties will be posted here.

At issue is the physical battle that happened between Gaffalione and the jockey of Japan's Forever Young, Ryusei Sakai. It appeared Gaffalione put his hand and whip onto Forever Young.

Sierra Leone came in second in the photo finish with Forever Young coming in third. The Derby winner, Mystic Dan, won by his nostrils.

After the Derby, the stewards determined there was no review needed, and pointed out that no objections were filed.
