LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) – The University of Louisville Athletic Association and Board of Trustees voted Vince Tyra as the new UofL Athletic Director.
The ULAA personnel committee started their meeting to discuss the vote at 10 a.m. and the hire was approved by the the full ULAA just before noon on Monday, March 26.
Tyra’s hire was approved by two more groups, the Board of Trustees personnel committee and the full Board of Trustees, around 1 p.m.
The contract for Tyra is a 5-year deal at $850,000 per year. Tyra said during his first news conference as UofL's AD that UofL is in his family's DNA. He said "the grass will kill the weeds" at the university.
Tyra said he has seen success in filling athletic spots and there will be a big one to fill "in the near future."
Tyra was asked what he was looking for in the next head basketball coach for the men's team and here's what he said.
“Someone who really wants to be here and has a love and passion for this university. They can get in here and really appreciate the legacy and can relate to this community and has all of the virtues that represent our culture. They're certainly going to be a winner or they wouldn't make the finalist list. That's really important to have a fit right now. They need to understand what our expectations are with regards to running a clean program as well," Tyra said.
WHAS11’s Holden Kurwicki was there when the ULAA voted and applause broke out during the unanimous vote.
