LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville's Yared Nuguse will compete for a gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Nuguse finished first in his semifinal race Sunday in the men's 1500 meters, running a 3:31.72. He jumped to the front of the pack seconds after the gun and remained there the entire race.
He will run in the final on Tuesday. Fellow Americans Hobbs Kessler - who finished third in the same semifinal as Nuguse - and Cole Hocker also qualified for the final.
Nuguse graduated from Louisville's Manual High School in 2017 before continuing his career and education at the University of Notre Dame.
He qualified for the same event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, but did not make it to the semifinals. According to his college athletics profile at Notre Dame, he qualified for the 2020 Games in the 1500 by placing third in the Olympic Trials his senior year of college.
In 2019, Nuguse was the NCAA Division I champion in the 1500. He was the U.S. champion in 2023.
Nuguse graduated from duPont Manual High School in 2017 and also won the Kentucky Cross Country State Championship.
