Paris Preview, July 27: Let the Games begin, Ledecky gets a shot at redemption

There is already some serious hardware up for grabs on the first full day of competition after the Opening Ceremony.

PARIS, France — The Summer Games will officially get underway Saturday with the first Paris medals on the line.

Here's what's ahead for Saturday, July 27 in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Swimming

Pool powerhouse Katie Ledecky has her first shot at gold in the 400-meter freestyle on Saturday. She took home gold in Rio and silver in this event at the Tokyo Olympics. She'll get a chance at redemption as she faces off again with Tokyo gold medalist Ariarne Titmus.

Heats take place earlier in the day and the final later Saturday evening. After this, we won't see Ledecky again until Tuesday for 1500-meter freestyle heats.

It's a full day of swimming events: Other finals include the men's 400-meter freestyle, and the men's and women's 4x100-meter freestyle relay races.

Skateboarding

Men’s skateboarders are set to drop in on the street course. Eight skaters will make it through the preliminary round and compete for medals later in the day in the final round at the Place de la Concorde.

Soccer

U.S. men’s soccer, which is back at the Olympics for the first time since 2008, faces New Zealand in a group stage match.

The team lost to France 3-0 in a tough opening game on Wednesday, making Saturday's match crucial if they hope to make it out of the group stage.

What else is happening Saturday at the Olympics?

Men's gymnastics begins qualifying rounds. The U.S. men's gymnastics team is hoping for its first medal since 2008.

The U.S. men's volleyball team takes on Argentina in a group stage match.

The Flavor Flav-sponsored U.S. women's water polo team takes on Greece in the group stage.

Men's rugby semifinals, gold and bronze medal games will all take place Saturday.
