1 dead, 3 in critical condition after wrong-way crash on Gene Snyder Freeway

LMPD received multiple calls alerting officers to a reckless driver Tuesday night, moments before the fatal crash occurred.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — One person is dead and three are critically injured after a fatal crash Tuesday night on a Louisville interstate.

At about 10:15 p.m., LMPD received multiple calls alerting police to a reckless driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes on the Gene Snyder Freeway near Stonestreet, according to an LMPD news release.

Shortly after the calls came in, LMPD received additional calls for service, stating the wrong-way driver hit another vehicle head-on.

The wrong-way driver, operating a Toyota Corolla, was the sole occupant in the vehicle and is in critical condition at the hospital.

The vehicle traveling southbound correctly was a Hyundai Sonata and it was occupied by three people.

One of the occupants of the Sonata was pronounced dead on scene and the other two occupants are in critical condition at the hospital, LMPD said.

Thursday evening, the Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 25-year-old Stephen Coleman III.

LMPD's Traffic Unit is investigating the cause of the crash. I-265 South was closed for several hours following the collision.
