LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Construction is underway on Bardstown Road in the Highlands in an effort to make the busy street always filled with pedestrians a little bit safer.
Crews are currently working to extend curbs and crosswalks.
Tyler Park Neighborhood President Shawn Reilly says there have been issues with speeding lately.
“We’ve had five cars crash into businesses in the last year – so hopefully by narrowing the street that will make it safer and we won’t have any more cars crashing into buildings,” he said.
Neighborhood leaders say this is part of the $1 million dollar investment that will protect walkers, shorten crosswalk distances, slowdown drivers and reduce car crashes.
“God forbid – a pedestrian gets hit by a car. So the hope is this slows traffic down, makes the crosswalks safer – this will be better for everybody,” Reilly said.
The upgrades will also include more striping and surfacing along the busy corridor.
The project should be complete by winter.
