LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Clark Memorial Bridge will go under a temporary closure Friday before fully reopening both sides for the evening commute.
From 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., the bridge will be closed so crews can remove the temporary traffic striping and clear construction equipment from the bridge, then re-stripe the roads to restore the bridge back to four lanes, with two lanes in each direction. This is all weather permitting.
The bridge currently only has two southbound lanes open.
If there are no weather delays, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) said northbound and southbound traffic is expected to continue by 5 p.m. Friday. If there are weather delays, continued work, traffic closures, and the bridge’s reopening could happen on Saturday or Monday.
"The repair project is on track to be finished nearly a week ahead of schedule, which will help avoid disruptions to the city's preparations or the fireworks company's staging for Thunder Over Louisville," Morgan Woodrum, KYTC spokesperson, said. "The event traditionally necessitates a three-day closure of the bridge to traffic."
Repairs for the bridge started on March 20, and have included removal of the damaged sidewalk structure, replacement of steel sidewalk beams and pedestrian handrail, new concrete walking surface, utility repairs and paint touch-ups.
The original reason the bridge closed was due to a crash on March 1 that sent a semi over the edge, damaging some of the concrete.
