MEMPHIS, Ind. — A woman is dead after a crash Wednesday morning involving four semi-trucks in southern Indiana.
At about 5:30 a.m., a 911 caller reported that a semi-truck has rear-ended another semi-truck on the off-ramp from I-65 South onto Memphis Blue Lick Road in Memphis, Indiana, according to an ISP news release.
First responders on the scene found the driver of a black 2017 Volvo semi-truck entrapped in his cab. He had a head injury and was flown to UofL Hospital in Louisville.
A woman in the sleeper of the same truck was entrapped and unresponsive. Once first responders got her out, she was pronounced dead shortly after.
Investigators believe three semi-trucks with trailers were parked on the right emergency lane of the off-ramp when a fourth semi-truck, the black 2017 Volvo, exited onto the same ramp and, for an unknown reason, traveled off the right side of the exit lane, clipping the front end of the first parked semi-truck.
The Volvo then continued off the right side of the off-ramp and collided with the rear of a second tractor. As the Volvo continued forward, it lifted and traveled underneath the trailer of the second truck until it collided with the rear of the second tractor. The collision pushed the second semi-truck into the back of a third parked truck.
The driver of the second semi-truck sustained injuries, however, officials believe he will survive. He was transported to UofL Hospital by a ground ambulance.
The off-ramp remained closed to traffic until approximately 1 p.m. Wednesday. Officials haven't released any names of any people involved and are working to notify family members.
The Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction team is investigating a fatal crash.
