Coroner identifies 25-year-old killed in crash on I-64 West near Gene Snyder

A fatal crash involving a semi, and two other vehicles left traffic backed up around I-64 West just before the Gene Snyder (I-265).

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — One person is dead following a crash on I-64 West in eastern Jefferson County.

The incident reportedly happened near the 19-mile marker before the approach of the Gene Snyder Freeway just before 5 p.m. Monday.

LMPD states witnesses at the scene said traffic was slowing down in westbound lanes due to heavy congestion and construction when a semitrailer in the center lane collided with a pickup truck. That caused a chain reaction crash involving five other vehicles that were damaged.

Police said the driver and sole occupant of the pickup, later identified as 25-year-old Colton Tanner, died at the scene.

Two other victims in another vehicle were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the semitrailer was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

I-64 was reopened Monday evening after being closed for several hours.

LMPD’s Traffic Unit is handling the investigation.
