LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge, which carries I-65 South from Louisville into southern Indiana, is fully reopened for drivers to cross.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) officials said the bridge's left three lanes were closed on May 20 after engineers found damage to an expansion joint. The joint is a component of the bridge deck, or travel surface, which allows for thermal expansion and contraction due to changes in weather to prevent concrete from cracking.
"After a thorough assessment, engineers developed and finalized a repair plan that included immediate maintenance work," officials said.
After crews repaired damage to the left three lanes, they moved over to the four right-most lanes on Monday, June 10 to perform "proactive inspections and similar maintenance work."
A long-term repair project to completely replace the expansions joints at both ends of the bridge is still in the works, however. KYTC said details regarding the project, including additional lane closures, will be shared once the construction contract is awarded.
