LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Three lanes of I-65 South across the Kennedy Bridge will remain closed until further notice.
Crews with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet had closed the left three lanes near the Indiana (mile-marker 137) approach after discovering a damaged finger joint in an interior travel lane.
Engineers said the damage was isolated to one section of the joint and have determined the “complexity of the repair” requires work from a bridge contractor.
KYTC has a project pending to replace expansion joints on the bridge and is currently expediting a repair contract.
Until the repairs are made, the lane closures will remain in place to avoid damage to vehicles traveling across the bridge. Three lanes are open to traffic approaching the bridge and all six lanes are open once drivers pass the damaged joint.
KYTC maintains the bridge is safe and structurally sound.
They explain the expansion joint is a component of the bridge deck that allows expansion and contraction to prevent the concrete from cracking.
Drivers on I-65 South should expect merging traffic and delays.
