Louisville man identified as pedestrian struck by shuttle bus and killed outside Valhalla Golf Club

"He was enjoying his time at Valhalla while working security. He liked to stay busy in retirement. We love him and will miss him."

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A pedestrian was killed in a crash Friday morning involving a shuttle bus outside of Valhalla Golf Club hours. The second round of the PGA Championship is now delayed due to the crash.

At about 5 a.m., Louisville Metro Police responded to a collision between a pedestrian and a bus where Shelbyville Road intersects Beckley Creek Parkway.

The Jefferson County Coroner identified the man as 69-year-old John Mills of Crestwood, Kentucky. Investigators said he tried crossing Shelbyville Road when the bus hit him. The bus travelled in the center lane meant for that type of traffic.

The Mills family said, "he was enjoying his time at Valhalla while working security. He liked to stay busy in retirement. We love him and will miss him."

Mills was pronounced dead on the scene. The LMPD Traffic Unit is investigating. Police reported no other injuries. 

PGA officials said Mills worked for one of the championship's vendors. 

The second round of the PGA Championship was delayed several hours. The play resumed at 8:35 a.m. All Round 2 Starting Times were delayed 1 hour and 20 minutes from the originally published time.

PGA shuttles were stopped for about two hours but as of 7:30 a.m. they've resumed. 

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said, "This morning, our city experienced a tragic accident that took the life of John Mills, a Louisvillian who will be greatly missed by his family and our community. Our focus is on this family who lost their loved one. I have spoken with members of Mr. Mills’ family to convey our city’s condolences."

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said, "This morning an incident occurred outside the PGA Championship that resulted in the heartbreaking death of a fellow Kentuckian. Our hearts are broken, and we continue to pray for the victim’s family. The events that occurred afterward are the unfortunate result of this tragic incident, and we are hopeful that all parties involved can come to a resolution."

PGA of America released the following statement in regards to the accident:

"This morning we were devastated to learn that a worker with one of our vendors was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club. This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship. We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones.”
