Coroner identifies driver found fatally shot in crashed car on Watterson Expressway

Police said the man's car flipped and hit two other vehicles.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Metro Police is investigating after a man was found shot inside his crashed car on Interstate 264 Thursday afternoon.

Police said a car was traveling east on I-264, otherwise known as the Watterson Expressway, when the driver, later identified as 36-year-old William McPheeters, somehow lost control of the car and flipped, hitting two other vehicles.

This happened near the Breckenridge Lane exit.

MetroSafe said this happened around 4:34 p.m., and the interstate was shut down around 4:46 p.m.

Investigators said no one in either of the vehicles struck by the flipped car were injured, but the driver in the flipped car had a fatal gunshot wound.

Several good Samaritans and first responders attempted to save McPheeters, but he died at the scene.

The Homicide Unit has ruled this as a death investigation, and LMPD's Traffic Unit is assisting as well.

All lanes were reopened four hours later.
