Parents, be prepared | Louisville interstate closure may cause JCPS bus delays

Chief Engineer Matt Bullock said that closing both lanes at the same time is a must because the road isn't wide enough to allow cars on while crews work.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Parents, just as a heads up; a Louisville interstate closure may affect Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) buses for several days.

In a press release, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) said I-71 South between the Watterson Expressway and Gene Snyder Freeway will be closed for 10 days starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16 through Monday, Sept. 26 at 7 a.m.

The ramps to I-71 South and I-265 interchange will also be closed.

KYTC suggests drivers use the following alternative routes:

  • For motorists on I-71 South and I-265 South will be I-265 South to I-64 West to I-264 East to I-71 South.
  • Motorists on I-265 North can continue to US. 42 West (Exit 37) to I-264 East to I-71 South.

Chief Engineer Matt Bullock said it's part of a resurfacing project.

"There's an area about 3,000 feet long on Southbound 71 that needs extra dig out on the asphalt base and surface," he said.

Bullock added that closing both lanes at the same time is a must because the road isn't wide enough to allow cars on while crews work.

"We feel from a safety standpoint this needs to be done, but we feel this will be a great pavement product in the end because we will get to pave both lanes at the same time," he said.

Bullock said he understands taking a different route will be tough, especially for schools.

JCPS leaders said parents can expect longer bus delays. They expect the Wilhoit bus compound will see the greatest impact. JCPS bus drivers plan to take Westport Road in the meantime.

Until the southbound lanes reopen, JCPS and KYTC ask for your patience.

"We'll work with you and get you through," Bullock said.
