KENTUCKY, USA — The long-delayed REAL ID deadline is just five months away and millions of Kentuckians have yet to make the switch.
Starting on May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration will begin to enforce REAL ID identification. Of the nearly 3.6 million licensed individuals in Kentucky, more than 1.1 million cardholders (approximately 32%) have upgraded to a REAL ID, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC).
That means nearly 2.5 million Kentuckians are still carrying non-compliant IDs that they won't be able to use when taking a domestic flight.
KYTC spokesperson Naitore Djigbenou says it's possible many of those without a REAL ID are planning on using a different form of identification at airports.
"Some Kentuckians may already have another acceptable form of REAL ID, like a passport, U.S. passport card or military ID, to maintain travel and access benefits once federal enforcement begins," Djigbenou said.
This summer, if travelers at airports across America try to use an ID that isn't REAL ID-compliant, they will be turned away at security.
Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport spokesperson Natalie Ciresi Chaudoin said the airport encourages travelers to be mindful during summer vacation travel.
"It’s best for travelers to plan ahead and allow ample time for REAL ID processing if they have a flight on or soon after the deadline date," Chaudoin said.

When is the REAL ID deadline?
The deadline is May 7, 2025. On that day, TSA agents at airports and security at federal buildings across the country will stop accepting non-REAL ID documents, such as a standard driver's license, as proof of identity.
Could the REAL ID deadline be delayed again?
Originally, the law mandated the switch to REAL IDs by 2008, but that date has been pushed back several times. Most recently, in December 2022, the deadline was pushed back two years.
According to TSA officials, only about 56% of driver's licenses and IDs in circulation nationally are REAL ID-compliant, and officials aren't confident they'll get a significant number of new REAL IDs issued in time.
In September, TSA proposed a two-year transition period starting in May. It suggested agencies would begin "enforcement in phases" for anyone trying to use their ID for federal purposes, including for getting through airport security.
While the proposal from TSA would leave REAL ID's May 7, 2025, deadline in place, it would create a two-year transitionary period where agencies would begin to enforce in phases.
It is unclear what exactly the "phased enforcement approach" of REAL IDs will look like, however one example the proposal floats is that agents could issue "warnings" on a three-strike system where travelers would be able to pass through security with a non-compliant ID a few times without immediately being barred.
How can I get a REAL ID in Kentucky?
To obtain a REAL ID, you will need to bring a few pieces of documentation to any driver licensing regional office in Kentucky. Here's what you'll need:
- One document that establishes identity, date of birth, and proof of U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residence, or other lawful U.S. status. A birth certificate will suffice for most people.
- Your Social Security number (card not required) or evidence of SSN ineligibility.
- Two documents to establish proof of residence in Kentucky, such as a utility bill, paycheck stub, or mortgage payment
If your name, date of birth, or gender is different from what if displayed on your identity, you must show legal proof of the changes, such as a certified marriage certificate, court order or amended birth certificate. For a full list of acceptable documents, click here.

How can I tell if I already have a REAL ID?
If you've gotten a new driver's license in the last few years, it's possible you already have a REAL ID and don't even realize it.
A good indicator that you have a Kentucky-issued REAL ID is if your ID has a small black star in the top right-hand corner. If your ID has the star in the corner, chances are you have a REAL ID.

Will my passport work instead of a REAL ID card?
