LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After seeing more snow in the past day than Louisville had in all of 2023, our attention now shifts back to frigid temperatures.
Weather setup
People around Kentuckiana saw between 1 and 4 inches of snow. Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport received 2 inches officially, which is more than the 1.3” we saw for the entirety of 2023.
The snow our area got on Friday is going to play an important role in the crashing temperatures and how it will affect us.
Another blast of Arctic air is making its way through the Ohio Valley Friday afternoon. Temperatures will fall into the teens this evening, and then dip into the single digits overnight and Saturday morning.
As skies begin to clear Friday afternoon, the snow on the ground will allow temperatures to fall much more, using the snow as a "cooling agent."
Expect widespread wind chill temperatures Saturday morning to be below zero thanks to winds blowing from the northwest around ten miles per hour.
Because of these sub-zero temperatures, a wind chill advisory has been issued for all of Kentuckiana starting Friday night until 10 a.m. Saturday.
Cold temperatures continue into Saturday afternoon. Highs only climb to around 20 degrees with several communities likely staying in the teens. Winds will continue to hit Kentucky and Indiana from the northwest at 10 mph.
Sunday will warm up a little bit, with temperatures in the middle and upper 20s. If you don’t like this cold wave we’ve been experiencing, good news! A big warm up is coming.
Long term
We see quieter weather move in for this weekend and through Monday. A big warming trend starts Monday when we spring back to the lower 40s for highs – typical temperatures for middle January.
We continue to heat up through the rest of next week, but it’s going to come with rain. Tuesday jumps into the middle 40s, with 50s back in the forecast Wednesday into the weekend. Thursday and Friday show signs of being in the middle 50s which will feel quite balmy for this time of year.
As mentioned, rain will accompany these warmer temperatures. Widespread showers are likely starting Tuesday and continue through at least Friday.
Despite rain in the forecast, we still have drought conditions in the region, so this will be continued beneficial rainfall for us. Models indicate we may see 2”-2.5” during this time.
