LOUISVILLE, Ky. — As we get further into the autumn season, many eagerly await and anticipate the peak period of fall colors around Kentucky and southern Indiana.

Fall foliage typically reaches full force in late October into early November.

How vibrant the colors of the leaves are and how long they last changes every year, but is based on a number of factors including weather extremes.

Cooler temperatures cause the tree's chlorophyll to break down, leaving other chemicals that cause color changes. Bright colors are more likely when late summer is dry and autumn has sunny days with cooler nights.

Here's some photos, all from the same location in southern Indiana, showing how the change in colors usually happens around mid-to-late October through the first week of November.

This year our trees suffered drought conditions from late summer into fall, and this will likely dull some of the color. Also, the leaves could fall off faster by drying out and dying sooner.

The peak fall foliage will be happening over the next few weeks, especially the last week of October this year.

Some of the best, most well-known places to check out those fall colors around Kentucky and Indiana are Bernheim Forest, Jefferson Memorial Forest, Red River Gorge, and Brown County, Indiana
