ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. — Kentucky residents living below Jefferson County were able to use a lull in wintry weather Wednesday to prep for extremely icy conditions.
Travelers like Maggie Greenwood made quick pit stops in Elizabethtown to fuel up and make it home before the weather gets worse. Greenwood and her two-year-old son Jackson were traveling through the area to get back to Cincinnati.
"We were originally from Nashville, but we moved him up here," Greenwood said. "They actually specialize in kidney transplants for babies and dialysis in Cincinnati."
About 45 minutes away, Sawmill Farm fueled up its generators and checked its backup water supply to protect their poultry and cows from hazardous conditions. While farms are not often the first place people think of when storms arrive, their herds and families rely on dedication.
"The focus is on making sure we have ample feed and water, particularly for the cattle," Aaron Miller said. "We'll make sure that we have plenty of forages for them to eat that's in the form of dry hay, and then make sure that the water is ample and not frozen at this time of the year."
Pets are also getting attention too. The manager at a Feeder Supply said the hottest item in days has been pet-friendly salt that they've now sold out of. People have also been purchasing heating supplies or thermal pads for pets.
