PROSPECT, Kentucky — The National Weather Service (NWS) has upgraded the tornado that hit Jeffersonville, Indiana and Prospect, Kentucky during Tuesday's severe weather to an EF-2 as crews continue to survey storm damage on Thursday.
At least eight tornadoes have been confirmed in Kentuckiana, and one person died in Kentucky due to the severe weather.
Prospect, which is just northeast of Louisville, was among several communities that suffered substantial damage in the storms.
Officials said damage in the Beechland Beach area of Prospect and Jeffersonville showed the tornado had wind speeds upwards of 120 mph.
Entire roofs were torn off homes, insulation scattered across yards, and massive trees toppled over like twigs.
Here's a look at some of the damage:
Survey crews are still working to determine if the Prospect tornado is the same one that hit Jeffersonville, Indiana before crossing the Ohio River. EF-1 tornado damage was also found in Henry County, Kentucky.
NWS Louisville Meteorologist-in-Charge John Gordon said crews will likely be out surveying damage over the next few days, but said the biggest issue was people ignoring warnings while traveling on Tuesday.
'It should shock you.'
Despite warning sirens sounding over the Lewis and Clark Bridge as the storm moved from Indiana to Kentucky, some drivers kept driving through the wind and rain.
"The thing we gotta do better on, the travelers," he said. "The people on the road. I saw people driving in Armageddon yesterday. Watch the video of people driving over the East End Bridge. It should shock you."
