LOUISVILLE, Ky. — We get to enjoy all four seasons here in Kentuckiana, but doesn’t it seem like our seasons sometimes have seasons. Even though we’re getting deeper into springtime, we often get little cold snaps. Which if cold enough, can bring late-season frosts, which are not good for our flowers and gardens.
Spring is the season of change, it can be very warm, the month of may produce record highs in the 90s but when the jet stream takes a dive over the Ohio Valley, temperatures take a plunge.
Our temperatures can go well below normal with nighttime lows in the 30s and 40s.
These cold snaps have names. You may have heard of “blackberry winter”. This is simply a late spring cold snap occurring when the blackberries are in bloom, which is happening right now.
There are other names for spring cold spells, like dogwood winter, whippoorwill winter, redbud winter, and locust winter. These different names are based on what’s blooming or active in nature in particular regions during typical spring cold snaps.
