Oldham County neighbors assess damage from Helene

Residents deal with high winds, downed trees, and power outages. Here's how much one homeowner sustained in damage.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Oldham County resident Jim Kelleher left his home in Florida before Hurricane Helene hit, to deal with damage at his Kentucky home. A total of three trees in Kelleher's yard fell due to the remnants of the hurricane.

"We had the one tree go down on the side," said Kelleher. "Figured it was over. Came out here to move my truck and the second and third tree came down."

The first tree fell across a street, damaging his fence and powerlines in the process. This tree is also blocking traffic.

Kelleher said it will take a while to clean up and fix the mess the damage has made, especially since some has affected how the power comes into his home. This is a job, Kelleher said, will take an electrician to fix, not just LG&E.

"You asked me to put a number on it," said Kelleher. "I could've put a number on it a couple of years ago, but now with the way pieces are, who knows what it's going to cost."

Across the county, crews were responding to downed trees and power outages. La Grange Fire and Rescue were on the site of a blown transmitter, across the street from Mary Hoke's home. She heard the boom, but still had power.

"What happens, happens," said Hoke. "That's my attitude. I can't control it so."

Kelleher lost power and turned on his generator. After his quick dinner, he said he's staying home.

"We're going to revert back to the old days," said Kelleher. "We're going to sit around and maybe have a conversation."

Hoke shared the same sentiment and said if she lost power, she would turn on her candles and lanterns.
