LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Portions of Kentucky and southern Indiana have developed moderate drought conditions due to a lack of rain.

Remnants from Hurricane Francine will bring some much needed relief that may impact your morning commute. That's why the WHAS11 Weather Impact Team has issued an Alert Day for Friday, Sept. 13.

Here's what you need to know.

Impacts

A good, and much-needed soaking rain is expected Friday morning, thankfully severe weather or flooding is not expected.

Some minor ponding of water on the roads is possible with the rain from Francine's remnants. Unfortunately, the timing of the rain will be a headache for the morning rush hour commute on Friday.

Between a half-inch to an inch of rain will be received in Louisville from approximately midnight Friday morning through 2 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Timing

The rain is moving up from the south this morning.  Scattered showers will linger through midday, then turn lighter and fewer through the afternoon, with mostly dry conditions by this evening.

The rain will be the main story for Friday morning's rush hour commute.

Again, be on the lookout for ponding of water on the roads.

We are not concerned about a flash flooding risk as the rain will be gradual, but our soil has been so dry lately that the rain will take a while to be absorbed.

Some scattered showers and an isolated rumble of thunder are possible Friday afternoon, but most spots will stay partly cloudy to mostly cloudy Friday afternoon and evening.

Francine will continue to weaken and will park herself over western Kentucky into Friday night and Saturday morning.

Both Saturday and Sunday will be significantly more dry than Friday. As Francine weakens, a few isolated showers cannot be ruled out for the weekend. The majority of the weekend will be dry!

Fighting the Drought

This rain will be beneficial to say the least.

A drought still encompasses much of central Kentucky and southern Indiana as we remain in a huge deficit year-to-date and month-to-date.
