LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Despite the storms rolling through Tuesday morning, sunshine will take over and temperatures will quickly recover as we approach the afternoon.

Unfortunately, this is only day one of a three-day stretch of extreme heat that will impact Kentucky and Indiana. Because of the potentially dangerous heat, the WHAS11 Weather Impact Team has declared Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as Weather Impact Alert Days.

With the juicy air comes the threat for severe thunderstorms. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for much of the WHAS11 viewing area. The next round of storms will arrive between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

LIST: Current severe weather alerts in Kentucky and southern Indiana

The main threats will be heavy rain leading to localized flash flooding and strong wind. An isolated spin up tornado and hail cannot be ruled out.

High Temperatures

Severe thunderstorms aren't the only risk around Kentuckiana as Tuesday is the start of a very hot pattern with highs in the middle 90s.

While the air temperature is several degrees shy of the triple digits, the humidity will be making it feel like 100+ degrees.

Please keep in mind how quickly your car's temperature can turn deadly. It only takes minutes for the heat to become deadly inside of vehicles.

For example: With a 95 degree air temperature, the temperature will quickly surpass 110 degrees inside of the car.

As you try and find ways to beat the heat this week, remember these tips to stay cool:

  • Limit time outdoors and take frequent water breaks.
  • Find some shade when outside and if you start feeling dizzy, seek air conditioning inside!
  • If you're driving with children or pets, always remember to check the backseat of your car when you get out.
  • Be sure to check on your elderly neighbors or family members and those without air conditioning.
