LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The coldest air of the season so far is moving into Kentucky and southern Indiana this weekend. High temperatures will run 10° to 15° colder than normal with overnight lows dropping well below freezing.
A Weather Impact Alert has been issued for overnight Saturday due to some snow showers and bitter cold temperatures.
Louisville hasn’t had a low temperature in the 20s since Leap Day on Feb. 29, so this cold air will take some getting used to!
Whether you’re shopping or planning to check out holiday lights, make sure you bundle up this weekend.
FORECAST
Clouds will increase throughout the day Saturday; for those going to the Governor’s Cup in Lexington, expect temperatures in the 30s for game time.
Moisture will increase throughout Saturday afternoon with first some sprinkles or virga (rain that evaporates before reaching the ground) possible.
As the atmosphere becomes more saturated and temperatures drop, sprinkles will change over to flurries by sunset.
Light snow showers will continue overnight with temperatures dropping below freezing. Most of us are looking at an inch or less of snowfall accumulation; however, isolated amounts over one inch are possible with any enhanced bands that may develop.
Clipper systems are quick-movers, but can be difficult to pinpoint exactly where they will track.
Weather models are in agreement that Kentuckiana will receive light snowfall late Saturday; however, the exact placement of the swatch and higher bands differ from model to model, as seen below.
Regardless, expect travel impacts if you’ll be out on the roads late Saturday into Sunday morning.
Frigid temperatures linger into early next week before we thaw out slightly Wednesday into Thursday.
