LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Right on schedule for this time of year, Mother Nature is providing the Louisville Metro area with its first chance for snow flurries on Thursday.
A fairly strong storm system is brewing just to our north and will provide wind, some snow flurries and freezing temperatures to central Kentucky and southern Indiana.
Here's when we normally pick up our first light snow amounts of the fall and winter seasons.
Keep in mind, our ground temperatures are way too warm for any sort of snow accumulation. If any brief light snow showers were to stick, then they would be confined to grassy surfaces and will struggle to stick around.
WHAS11 is issuing a Weather Impact Alert Day for Thursday because the strong wind and cold air combined with the passing flurries will make for a "shock to the system." Many of us have not experienced this sort of weather pattern since last winter, so it is important that you dress in layers and take the necessary measures to combat the cold temperatures.
Timing
Temperatures & Wind
Wind gusts throughout this storm system will be on the breezy side. Expect gusts between 25-35 mph, with some isolated spots picking up to 40 mph. The worst of the wind will be for rural locations outside of Jefferson County.
Temperatures will not fall to unbearably cold readings, but could dip below freezing depending on your location.
Wind chill values may dip into the mid-to-upper 20s and lower 30s Thursday morning through Thursday evening. Bundle up and make sure you wear a hat and gloves if you plan to venture outside.
A little more relief comes our way Friday, but Friday will still stay gloomy and brisk.
A much quieter, mild weekend lies ahead after we deal with this mid to late week blast of cold, wind and routine flurries.
