Owners of PRP's Ice Cream Corner retiring, looking to sell business

The building on Greenwood Road sat as an abandoned gas station 15 years ago.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A legendary ice cream shop in south Louisville is going to have new owners soon.

In a social media post on Tuesday, the owners of PRP's Ice Cream Corner announced their intent to retire.

UPDATE: On July 3, the ice cream shop it has found a new owner. The new owners said almost everything will remain the same for customers.

The staple has been open for 15 years, and the current owners are hoping to sale the business to another owner.

"We've got grandkids, kids and after 15 years we're ready to settle down," co-owner Donnie Huddleston said.

Donnie and his brother Jeff Huddleston still want the ice cream tradition to continue.

"Well it would be devastating for anybody to come in here and try to tear this down and put, like everybody says, another liquor store or a car wash, we don't want that," Donnie said.

He said he and Jeff are even willing to help the new owners keep the business running.

"We're going to make sure that it will stay here," said Donnie.

It's a bittersweet moment and they said it wouldn't be possible without the community.

Over the years the ice cream shop has been a field trip for kids. It's also been a first job to many local teens who have signed a board inside the ice cream shop.

Faithful customers continue to come in the summer no matter what weather conditions are.

"I was driving by one day and it just hit me that an ice cream shop would probably do pretty well here," Jeff said.

This summer Eric Kildoo and his family have enjoyed their sweet treats underneath the roof in the banana split area.

"It's got a good atmosphere, they got good ice cream and great prices," said Kildoo.

The business will continue to operate under normal hours this summer.
