LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A puppy and a kitten who were injured and recovered together at the Kentucky Humane Society became fast friends. Now, they will be together forever.
Quill, a 3-month-old puppy, and Fritter, a 2-month-old kitten, met each other at vulnerable times in their lives and were reportedly inseparable during their recoveries.
Shelter officials said they hoped the animal friends would find a home together, and on Monday the pair were officially adopted into the same home.
"Well, we're over-the-moon to announce that Quill and Fritter have officially been adopted TOGETHER! ❤ Their foster paw-rents fell head-over-heels for their adorable antics, and decided to make it official," a KHS Facebook post said.
Quill and Fritter's Story
Quill arrived at the KHS after an "altercation" with another dog in early November. Officials said he could not close his mouth properly and he was clearly in a lot of pain.
"Our veterinary team immediately gave Quill medication to ward off the pain and infection," Andrea Mattingly, a spokesperson for KHS, said.
X-rays showed that Quill's lower jaw was broken. The KHS vet team performed surgery to temporarily realign and secure his jaw bones, but this was not a permanent solution.
A few days later, the team surgically removed the dead bone from his jaw, allowing him to now be able to close his mouth and eat by himself again.
Shortly after Quill's surgery, a young kitten named Fritter arrived at the shelter with a "shocking eye injury," according to KHS officials.
Mattingly said Fritter was "desperately in need of quick medical attention."
"His right eye was protruding from the socket and needed to be removed to avoid further complications or infection," Mattingly said.
Together, Quill and Fritter began their road to recovery after both suffering life-altering injuries. KHS officials said the two were inseparable.
"Fritter snuggled up to Quill as if they'd known each other in a past life. It’s clear that these two are happiest together, even trying to share their food. Their friendship melted our hearts and we couldn't bear to separate them while they continue healing," Mattingly said.
The two were in a foster home together, awaiting a forever home. Little did they know, their foster family would become their forever family.
"Now these two survivors will live out their days as best friends, all thanks to the support of people like you. THANK YOU for cheering them on, sharing their story and donating in their honor! HAPPY TAILS, QUILL AND FRITTER!" a KHS Facebook post said.
