Former JCPS teacher withdraws guilty plea in child sex abuse case

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On Wednesday, a former Jefferson County Public Schools teacher and coach withdrew his guilty plea in a child sex abuse case.

52-year-old Christopher Morris was set to be sentenced Wednesday, Dec. 4. He is facing 37 counts of child sex abuse.

More than two years ago, Morris was charged with two counts of unlawful transaction with a minor, 13 counts of sexual abuse and 22 counts of sodomy.

Prosecutors said two victims were coerced by Morris to engage in sexual conduct when he was in a position of authority over them as a JCPS employee. One of the victims was sexually abused between 2012 and 2015 while the other between 2019 and 2021.

Morris served as an instructor at Conway Middle School and was also a basketball and volleyball coach there. He had been with the district since 2005 but was fired in August 2021.

Under the original proposed plea agreement, Morris would likely have received two consecutive 10-year sentences. However, his sentencing hearing in now canceled and he will be present at a separate hearing on Dec. 20.
